Health and Safety Officer

Our client, an operator in the public sector, is recruiting a Health & Safety Officer to join their growing team of professionals. Being responsible for managing and coordinating all aspects relating to health and safety regarding projects, property and estates managed by the company. Additionally, the ideal candidate will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring that projects, property, and estate for which the company is responsible is safe and secure at all times, as outlined in the Maltese national legislation and best practices.
  • Liaising continuously with the HR & Administration Office to ensure that the occupational environment of employees is conformant with the relevant national and international health and Safety legislation and current best practice in this regard.
  • Providing recommendations, developing and implementing a Health and Safety framework
  • Developing and supervising the implementation and maintenance of a comprehensive Health and Safety program to prevent injury, occupational illness, and damage to company property.
  • Conducting facility and site inspections to perform job hazards analyses and other evaluations to identify Health and Safety hazards and potential risks
  • Conducting health and safety risk assessments before initiating a project and property-related works and ensuring that recommendations are implemented.
  • Designing and agreeing on a health and safety plan for all works contracted out by the company to third-party contractors.
  • Ensuring that third-party contractors and their employees abide by sign-off health and safety plans and measures and take corrective action, including the suspension of contractor employees, workers, and contractors in the event of default regarding such health and safety measures.
  • Designing and managing a fire management framework at the company's head office that includes the establishment of fire warden's escape routes, drills, essential first aid provision, fire equipment et al.
  • Liaising continuously with the relevant stakeholders on all matters about health and safety.
  • Participating in post-accident investigations and presenting recommendations on measures to prevent a future repeat of such accidents.
  • Collating and analysing incident statistics and advice on future Health and Safety policies and procedures accordingly.
  • Maintaining records and other necessary documentation related to Health and Safety matters, as established by legislation and regulations in this regard.
  • Promoting awareness within the company on the importance of complying with Health and Safety regulations.
  • Providing guidance and advice to employees on Health and Safety matters.
  • Attending briefings and meetings as necessary.
  • Preparing and presenting reports and other documentation to senior management as requested.
  • Performing any other job-related duties as necessary or as assigned that may be required from time to time.

Experience and Skills:

  • HND in Health & Safety, Site Supervision or a relevant field
  • Minimum of 3 years of working experience in a similar position
  • Meticulous and attentive to detail
  • Conscientious and problem-solving
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and sites simultaneously 
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent command of the English language
